Selby’s Historic Drama Event

Selby’s Historic Drama Event Six schools from Selby and District participated in composing and performing their own plays, based on different aspects of Selby’s past.

The performance took place in front of family and friends at Selby’s recently-opened Amphitheatre, on Ousegate. Subject matter included the founding of Selby Abbey, the Pilgrimage of Grace, family life of a flax worker, the Coming of the Railway, experiences of World War 2 evacuees and a medieval Mystery Play.

On the fine, sunny evening of 24th June, around 300 children and adults squeezed in to the Amphitheatre to see the show. The audience and performers seemed to enjoy it all, the Amphitheatre was demonstrated to be a fine performance space, and students had learnt a little about Selby’s hidden history in an entertaining way. A final collection also raised £50 for charity.
